People with Disabilities in the Circus Ring
„Circus in no walk in the park“, Dani says after her first training day. And Julius is conviced: „I like to become a fakir!“ Dani and Julius are training for a very special day – their first big performance in a circus ring. But they are no musculus artists: Julias was born with Down syndrome and Dani lives with an intellectual disability.
The extraordinary circus project was thought by the Bodelschwinghsche Stiftung Bethel for their 150th birthday. Julius and Dani should submit the evidence as representatives for other disabled persons: nobody has to hide from the public. And everybody can be a star in the circus ring.
Tag7 accompanied the project for several months. Circus educators helped at the training and lead the disabled circus performers to their limits: how to walk on broken glass without hurting oneself? How to hold the spinning plastic plates in balance and how to come on the trapece with a wheelchair? Moments of joy and happiness and setbacks are part of the story. We also accompany the disabled circus stars in their daily life that has nothing to do with spotlights and applause. Dani is packing screws at a sheltered workshop and Julius is going to a special school with his seriously disabled classmates.
Will the two get up the nerve to perform in front of more than 1.000 spectators in the circus ring?
